Library Reopening Updates

August 27, 2021

Due to rising rates of COVID-19, we recommend that all visitors to the library wear a mask. Thank you for helping protect our community!

August 3, 2021

During the pandemic, the library temporarily stopped charging overdue fines. We are pleased to announce that this change is now permanent—no more overdue fines at the Wayne Public Library! For more information, please see our Fine-Free FAQs.

July 13, 2021

We are now accepting donations of gently used books, CDs, and DVDs. We are unable to accept donations of damaged books, musty/moldy/dirty books, textbooks, encyclopedias, newspapers, magazines, puzzles, VHS tapes, or cassette tapes. Donations may be added to the library collection, sold in the Friends’ used book sales, or recycled.

June 22, 2021

As of today, June 22, 2021, patrons are no longer required to wear masks while inside the library building.

May 31, 2021

As of tomorrow, June 1, the library is moving to our next phase of reopening, “Limited Use”. The biggest change from the previous “Grab and Go” phase is that there are no longer time limits for your library visits—you are welcome to browse, study, and read for as long as you like. Masks are still required inside the library building for anyone ages 2 and up. Please check out our Frequently Asked Questions about Limited Use Service for more details.

May 15, 2021

Masks and social distancing are still required at the Wayne Public Library. While the CDC and State of Michigan have recently revised guidelines to indicate that vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks in many places, we want to make sure that we are complying with all applicable regulations and that we are doing our best to keep our staff and library patrons safe. We will continue to review and adjust our policies and keep you informed as things change.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and kindness.

May 4, 2021

We are sorry to report that a library employee has tested positive for COVID-19. This person has not had any close contact (6 feet or less for 15 minutes or more) with the public. Still, if you were in the library last week, we recommend that you monitor yourself carefully for symptoms. Any exposed library staff are quarantining according to the current guidelines from the CDC. The library remains open for Grab and Go service during its regular hours of operation.

April 24, 2021

In compliance with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' Emergency Order, the library now requires all visitors ages 2 and older (instead of 5 and older) to wear a mask that covers their nose and mouth while inside the library or attending any library-sponsored event. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions about Grab and Go Service for more information.

For the safety of our staff and our community, we continue to ask that you do not come to the library if you are sick, that you wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth at all times during your visit, and that you maintain 6 feet of distance between you and others not in your household. Thank you for protecting our community!

March 6, 2021

Good news—we have extended the time limits for visiting the library during Grab and Go service! You are now able to visit the library for 60 minutes (1 hour) or less. You can pick up holds, browse for materials to enjoy elsewhere, use the computers independently, make photocopies, fax documents, and speak to a librarian for help with reference questions, finding materials, or using downloadables. Check out our Frequently Asked Questions about Grab and Go Service for more information.

If you have any questions about our current levels of service, please contact us at help@wayne.lib.mi.us or 734-721-7832.

If you would like to use our Plaza Pickup service to pick up items you have on hold without coming inside the building, you can do so at any time during our regular operating hours, without an appointment. Just come to the Veteran’s Plaza entrance and follow the directions on the signs. We are also still open for Grab and Go service, for quick visits of 30 minutes or less, if you prefer to come inside the building.

June 11, 2020

We are excited to announce that we will be starting Plaza Pickup on Tuesday, June 16!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Starting June 16, put items that you want to check out on hold in our catalog. For now, you’ll only be able to place holds on items that the Wayne Public Library owns.

  2. We’ll get your items together and contact you to set up a time to come get them. (Please don’t come to the library until we contact you!)

  3. Call us when you arrive at the Veterans Plaza library entrance and we’ll bring your items out to you, already checked out.

For more information and answers to some frequently asked questions, please check out our Plaza Pickup FAQs. We have never offered pickup service before, so details may change as we learn what works well. Please be patient with us as we work through this new process together. We are very excited to get to see you in person again soon!

June 8, 2020

Staff are returning to the building this week to get the library ready to start offering pickup service soon! Here’s what you can do to help:

1. Log onto your online account and review your hold requests. If you have something on hold that you no longer need, please cancel it. (If you have items on hold that are already in transit or ready for pickup you won’t be able to cancel them. Don’t worry--we’ll be contacting you soon to see if you still want those items.)

2. If you have items checked out, please start returning those to our outdoor return bins.

3. Please don’t bring us any donated books at this time. We had thousands of items checked out when we closed and we will have our hands full with all of those coming back!

4. We have a full schedule of summer events that we’ve transitioned to online, distance, and take-home programs. Please checkout our online calendar and join us for some fun virtual events!

June 3, 2020

UPDATE: EO 2020-110 will allow libraries to open earlier than previously anticipated! We are planning a phased reopening, gradually bringing back services as we carefully consider local/state/federal recommendations, the availability of supplies, staffing levels, and our ability to manage each phase safely and successfully.

We hope to start offering plaza pickup of materials and phone reference by mid-month and will update with specific dates and hours of operation as soon as we know more. We are eager to welcome everyone back!

Also, we WILL be having a Summer Reading Program this year. For more information, to sign up online, and to see a calendar of virtual events, please check out our Summer Reading page.

Do you need a library card to access our digital resources? If you live in the City of Wayne, you can now request a temporary digital library card online! This will give you a library card number that you can use to download materials from Overdrive/Libby or hoopla. Once the library is open again, you can come in with your ID to convert your temporary digital card into a permanent card with full borrowing privileges. Happy reading!

We miss seeing everyone! We are working on plans to start bringing back services as soon as it is safe and we are legally allowed to do so. In the meantime, please take advantage of our digital materials on Tumblebooks, Overdrive/Libby, and hoopla!

We are still working through all of the operational procedures for our closure, but here is the information we have to share as of now. We will continue to post updates as we know more.

1. We expect we will reopen on Tuesday, April 7, at 10:00 am, but we will confirm that closer to that date.

2. Any items owned by the Wayne Public Library that are currently checked out will have their due dates extended until May 1.

3. We will not charge overdue fines until further notice. If you have an item checked out that isn't able to have its due date extended, we will waive any related overdue fines.

4. Since we are extending due dates and not charging overdue fines, there is no need to return your checked out items at this time. You can still return items to our dropbox while we are closed if you wish, but you don't need to.

5. If your Wayne Public Library card expired in 2020 or was set to expire soon, your expiration date will be extended until May 1. While we are closed, please take advantage of our downloadable ebooks and audiobooks, available through the Libby or Overdrive apps.

6. You can continue to place items on hold, but no holds will be fulfilled until we reopen.

7. You are unable to place interlibrary loan requests through MeL.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time!
